Project Overview
Located at 19 S. Wabash in Chicago, this 5-story building formerly housed office and retail space dating back to the late 1800’s. Construction was performed above an occupied retail space (Iwan Reis & Co. cigar shop) and the tenant was able to remain open through the duration of the project. Significant restoration and preservation of the envelope and certain interior components of the building was necessary to receive state and federal tax credits.
Project Outcome
Cubed navigated a host of logistical challenges given the building’s location in a dense area of Chicago’s Loop. Significant structural changes were made to the building including cutting out a light well that shared a party wall with the adjacent building and shoring the entire facade to recreate historical cast iron columns. The building was master leased to Sonder, a leader in the short-term hospitality market and bookings for the 39 luxury suites began in February of 2021. The owner engaged Cubed to perform his next adaptive reuse project in Chicago’s Loop.
